Oral-Formulaic Theory: Annotated Bibliography
Ian Michael. "A Comparison of the Use of Epic Epithets in the Poema de mio Cid and the Libro de Alexandre." Bulletin of Hispanic Studies 38:32-41.
By comparing the density and function of epithets in the two poems, he argues for an Alexandre not intended for public performance. Sees the epithet used well in many ways in the Cid (filler, variety of phrasing, added adulation, leitmotif, cross-reference, dramatic effect) as opposed to the pedestrian usage in the literate Alexandre. Accepts the idea of oral-formulaic phraseology as active and shaping.Area: HI
