Oral-Formulaic Theory: Annotated Bibliography

Deborah Tannen. "Oral and Literate Strategies in Spoken and Written Narratives." Language, 58:1-21.

A theoretical linguistic analysis of oral and context-based versus literate tendencies in spoken and written forms. Finds that "the features which have been identified as characterizing oral discourse are also found in written discourse" (1), and that the written narrative uses both oral and literate strategies. A touchstone for a field that runs parallel to oral-formulaic studies.
