Compares the usage of noun-epithet phrases in the Hymn to that in Homer, Hesiod, and the other hymns. In its differences from Homeric practice he finds the Demeter closer to Hesiod than to the other hymns. Explains the variance as resulting "either from a loosening of the bonds of Homeric word-association or from the creation of new formulae" (137).
