An interesting comparison of European written (archival) records and native Dahomeyan oral tradition as sources for the reconstruction of a historical event: the French conquest of the late 19th century and the installation of King Agoli-Agbo. Notes that the oral tradition cannot alone provide an unambiguous picture of the situation, but, "appuyée par les documents écrits, lorsqu'ils existent, elle apporte une part irremplacable à la reconstitution du passé" (204).
